Reefer load boards: free vs paid, the filters that matter, and red flags

How load boards list reefer freight
A load board is a marketplace where brokers, and some shippers, post loads and carriers post trucks. Each posting has the basics: origin, destination, pickup date, equipment type, weight, length, and often a rate or "call for rate." Reefer loads are tagged with the reefer equipment type, sometimes with variants for reefer-or-van loads that accept either.
What postings often leave out is exactly what a reefer carrier needs: the setpoint, the mode, pre-cool requirements, pulp temperature instructions, and the delivery appointment. Treat a posting as a lead, not a load. The details come from the broker call and the rate confirmation.
Choosing the best load board for reefer: criteria
We don't publish a ranking, because which board is best depends on your lanes. These are the criteria worth comparing:
- Reefer volume in your lanes. Search your home market and your usual delivery markets during a trial and count real reefer posts.
- Rate data. Lane averages for reefer let you counter with numbers instead of guesses.
- Broker vetting. Credit scores, days-to-pay and authority checks inside the board save time and protect you from bad payers.
- Mobile app. You'll search from the cab more than from a desk.
- Price per user. Some boards price per user, some per block of users.
- Booking tools. Instant-book loads and alerts help, but they don't replace reading the rate con.
Free vs paid reefer load boards
Prices below are from each company's own pages, checked in October 2026. Boards change plans often, so confirm before you buy.
| Board | Plans and monthly price (Oct 2026) | Reefer-relevant notes |
|---|---|---|
| DAT One | Standard $59, Enhanced $149, Pro $169, Select $259, Office $339 | Enhanced adds 15-day reefer lane rate averages; Pro adds 7-day averages |
| Truckstop | Reefer Basic $42 and Reefer Pro $159 per 3-user block; $42 application fee, credited if approved | Reefer plans show refrigerated freight only |
| 123Loadboard | Standard $39, Premium $59, Premium Plus $79 | Premium Plus adds rate check; no contracts per the company's FAQ |
| Trucker Path Loadboard | Free to download, in-app purchases | Listed as free on the App Store; paid features vary |
Free boards are a reasonable way to look at a market, but they usually show less freight and less information about the broker. For a carrier who books most of its own loads, a paid board with reefer rate data tends to pay for itself if it raises your average rate even a little per mile.
Filters worth setting
- Equipment: reefer (and reefer-or-van if you'll take dry freight between reefer loads).
- Origin radius that matches the deadhead you're willing to run. Price the deadhead in, don't ignore it.
- Pickup date today and tomorrow for spot loads, further out for planning.
- Weight: remember a reefer's tare is higher than a van's, so heavy loads hit the limit sooner.
- Destination markets with good reloads. A load into a dead market costs you the next day.
- Broker credit and days-to-pay, if the board shows them.
Then do the math. Run any load you're considering through the rate per mile calculator, and compare it with the current national numbers in our reefer rates guide.
Red flags on reefer load boards
Freight fraud is a real problem on load boards, and reefer loads, with valuable food cargo, attract it. Watch for:
- A broker you can't verify. Look up the MC number on FMCSA's Licensing and Insurance site and check the authority is active and the $75,000 broker bond is on file. Call the phone number listed there, not the one in the post or email.
- Email domains that almost match a known broker's.
- Rates far above the market for the lane and day.
- Changes after booking: a new pickup address, a new consignee, or a request to haul to a different warehouse.
- Requests for money: deposits, "setup fees" or anything paid before a load.
- Pressure to skip the rate confirmation or to start before it arrives.

A dispatcher vs a load board subscription
A load board is a tool; a dispatcher is a person using the tools for you. With a board, you pay a monthly fee and do the searching, calling, negotiating and paperwork yourself. With a dispatcher, you pay a percentage of gross on loads hauled and someone else does that work, including reading the reefer-specific terms and planning the reload. Many carriers start with a board, then add a dispatcher once the time on the phone starts costing them driving hours.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best load board for reefer?
The best one is the board with the most reefer loads in your lanes and the rate data to price them. For most reefer carriers that means one of the large paid boards, but try a board in your actual lanes before committing. We don't rank boards because the answer changes by region and by month.
Are there free reefer load boards?
Some apps are free to download and search, with paid upgrades; Trucker Path's load board app, for example, is listed as free with in-app purchases on the App Store. Free boards tend to show fewer loads and less broker information. Paid boards often offer trials.
Do I need a load board if I have a dispatcher?
Not usually. A dispatcher searches the boards and calls brokers for you. Some carriers keep their own subscription to watch the market or book the odd load themselves, which is fine with us.
How do I find reefer loads by temperature?
Filter by equipment type reefer first. Some boards show the temperature or commodity in the posting, but many don't, so call the broker and confirm the setpoint, mode and pre-cool before you agree to anything.
How can I spot a fake load on a board?
Check the broker's authority on FMCSA's Licensing and Insurance site using the MC number, call the phone number listed there rather than the one in the post, and walk away from rates far above the market, last-minute changes to the pickup address, or requests to pay anything up front.
